Laboratories involved in water treatment or maintenance serving electricity authorities, power plants and similar establishments need to provide fast and dependable analyses of Na/K in the low ppb levels. Statistics attribute nearly 50% of plant outages to the failure of steam turbines and boiler waterwalls due to corrosion and deposits. Water and steam chemistry lie at the heart of the corrosion problem. When the NaCl concentration in superheated steam exceeds about 5 ppb, the salt will precipitate and a portion may deposit. Therefore impurities in steam and condensate cycles need to be carefully monitored and kept at an absolute minimum.

Advanced Technical Services GmbH of Switzerland has developed an analyser that fulfils these objectives. The new ATS 200PPB Low Na/K Analyser is based on atomic emission (AE) but incorporates a new technology that makes it very easy to analyse dependably Sodium down to below the aforementioned 5 ppb level.

The ATS 200PPB low Na/K analyser is a high sensitivity flame emission photometer that is easy to operate and can measure Sodium and Potassium down to below 5 ppb. The instrument has a greatly extended analysis range which enables it to analyse these elements also in the higher ppm ranges without any additions or changes. The ATS 200PPB low Na/K analyzer does not need highly inflammable Oxygen/Hydrogen gas mixture but works with simple propane gas/air mixture.

The ATS/20930 is of compact design, simple to operate and incorporates the following features: ·automatic electronic ignition with triple gas fail safe device for flame monitoring · ATS precision nebulizer · soft key selectors · LEDs functions monitor · Auto-zero, Auto-cal and memory push button selectors · with RS232 interface for computer connection. As an alternative to a computer, a printer can be connected to the basic instrument that will printout - on a normal paper roll - the full analysis with all relevant data.

The new ATS 200PPB Low Na/K Analyser (HPFP)Ô can be used as a basic stand alone instrument with manual operation (ATS/20930), with 10 seconds test speeds, or it can become a semi or fully automated system (ATS/20943), with autosampler, precision micro dilutor and PC Computer Data System and Printer. The basic instrument has a built-in computer interface so that it can be connected to most PCs. A proprietary analytical software is also available and allows all analyses to be edited and printed in a report format ready for signature. The original data collected by the analyser however cannot be edited to ensure audit safety.
